Council tax scam warning to residents

Page last updated on Thursday, November 11, 2010

New Forest District Council is warning of a council tax phone scam in which residents are told that, due to making regular and timely payments, they are due a one off payment from the government. The caller quotes values in the £’000’s.

Residents have contacted the council after bogus phone calls were made to their homes.

The residents were given a phone number to call to receive their payment and in some cases were asked for their bank details.

New Forest District Council wishes to make clear that the caller is not from the council and the number given to call is not known by the council.

NFDC portfolio holder for crime and disorder, Cllr Goff Beck, warned:

“Forest residents should be on the alert for these types of calls. They are a scam, which has been operating around the country and now it seems the New Forest is being targeted.

The council would never call council taxpayers and ask for their bank details over the phone or request that another telephone call is made to claim a payment so I urge everybody to be wary if they do receive such a call and obviously do not give any account details.”

Anybody concerned after receiving such a call or seeking further advice can contact Glenda Chambers, audit services, on 023 8028 5789 or the Fraud Hotline 0800 0851 637
