With Christmas just around the corner, New Forest residents are being encouraged to keep recycling as much as possible over the festive season.

Household refuse collection dates have also been announced.

Every household can recycle paper (no gift wrap please), card, plastic bottles, tins, cans and empty aerosols in the clear sack.

Glass bottles and jars, textiles and shredded paper should be taken to one of the local recycling centres and put in the designated container.

Changes to household refuse and recycling collections have been kept to a minimum and will only affect residents that have collections on a Monday or Tuesday.

There will be no collection on Monday 27 December or Tuesday 28 December but a double collection will take place on Monday 3 January 2011 and Tuesday 4 January.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday collections will not be affected.

When the festivities are over, real Christmas trees can be taken to one of the Christmas tree collection points, open from Monday 3 January to Sunday 9 January.

You can also take your Christmas tree to one of the household waste recycling centres, or put trees less than 1.8m (6ft) out for collection with your refuse and recycling. Christmas trees put out for collection with refuse and recycling will not be recycled.

New Forest District Council’s portfolio holder for environment, Councillor Edward Heron, said:

“There will be lots of extra waste over Christmas and New Year so let’s keep up the good work by recycling as much of it as we can.”
